Meet the Team: Spotlight on Emma – Payroll Manager at dhpayroll

At dhpayroll, we pride ourselves on our team’s expertise, dedication, and ability to adapt to an ever-changing industry. In this edition of Meet the Team, we’re excited to introduce Emma, a key leader within our payroll bureau. With a role that spans payroll management, HR responsibilities, and team development, Emma’s contributions are integral to the success of both our clients and our internal team. Read on to discover more about Emma’s journey, insights, and the passion that drives her work.

 1. Can you tell us a bit about your role at dhpayroll and what it involves on a day-to-day basis?

My role is to ensure the smooth operation of the payroll bureau, optimising available resources, keeping up with new developments, and delivering a service that meets and often exceeds our clients’ expectations. A major part of my job is ensuring compliance with the changing payroll legislation, which is vital to the accuracy of our clients’ payrolls and the security of their data.

A typical day involves checking in with the team, understanding their needs, and prioritising the workload. Calls, emails, and meetings with clients and both internal and external partners are a constant. It’s crucial to stay connected to ensure we’re offering the right services while planning future developments.

Alongside payroll management, I also manage the HR function for David Howard. This covers everything from staff inductions and contracts to absence management and benefits. Keeping the wellbeing of our staff at the forefront is a key priority for me.

As payroll is part of the broader business, I also work with other teams to ensure everything runs smoothly and the business remains efficient. It’s a dynamic role and I enjoy the variety it brings each day.

  1. What is the most rewarding part of your job?

The most rewarding part of my role is developing the team. I love supporting individuals to grow, providing encouragement, and watching them move forward in their careers. I’m incredibly proud of the team and their professionalism. They rise to every challenge with a wonderful work ethic and consistently go above and beyond for our clients.

As a payroller at heart, I find great satisfaction in ensuring our clients’ staff are paid accurately and on time, every single pay date. That sense of achievement never gets old.

  1. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received in your career?

“Believe in your abilities and always strive to be the best you can be.” This advice has always stuck with me. It’s crucial to trust in your skills and push yourself to reach your full potential.

  1. What skills do you think are essential for someone working in payroll or a similar industry?

Attention to detail and the ability to multitask are essential. Payroll is a fast-paced environment, and precision is key. A strong desire to learn and grow is important too, as legislation is always changing.

Additionally, a strong work ethic and a good team spirit are vital. You need to rely on each other during busy periods, and a good sense of humour never hurts either!

  1. What’s one fun fact about yourself that your colleagues might not know?

I completed a static line parachute jump from 10,000 feet when I was 17 years old! It’s probably a surprise to most people, as I’m not the type to take part in high-risk activities now. It’s something I’m proud of, but I think my colleagues would be shocked to learn that I once jumped out of a plane by myself!

  1. How would you describe the company culture here at dhpayroll?

We’re a professional family! We work hard, support one another, and remain friendly and approachable. Everyone is focused on delivering great service to our clients while contributing to the growth and development of the business. It’s a culture of collaboration and respect.

  1. What’s one piece of advice you would give to new employees joining the team?

I encourage new staff to have an inquisitive mindset—ask questions, learn, and grow. Make use of the resources available to you and listen to your colleagues. Constant learning and seeking better ways of working will help you reach your full potential.

  1. What’s your proudest professional achievement?

I’m most proud of how I’ve learned to believe in myself. I’ve developed confidence in my abilities and trust in my potential. Balancing a full-time career with raising a family has been challenging but incredibly rewarding. I’ve set and achieved goals that have shaped my career, and I’ve learned the most from the mistakes I’ve made along the way.

As a manager, I also take great pride in helping others see their potential and encouraging them to achieve their goals. Watching others succeed and grow in their careers is one of the most fulfilling aspects of my job.
